International Council of Ethologists

The International Council of Ethologists (ICE) is a premier global organization dedicated to advancing the scientific study of animal behavior. Serving as a unifying body for researchers, educators, and practitioners, ICE fosters international collaboration and knowledge exchange in ethology and related disciplines. ICE was founded in 1950 to foster international collaboration among scientists studying animal behavior. The beginnings of the Council were shaped by pioneers in the newly emerging domain of animal behaviour such as Niko Tinbergen, Gerard Baerends (Netherlands), Konrad Lorenz (Austria), William Thorpe, J.Z. Young (UK), Erich von Holst, Otto Koehler (Germany), Paul Weiss, and Karl Lashley (USA). Originally established to promote the nascent field of ethology, the council played a pivotal role in organizing the first International Ethological Conferences, which became renowned gatherings for sharing groundbreaking research. Over the decades, ICE has grown into a globally recognized organization, supporting research and education in ethology and related disciplines. The council actively supports cutting-edge research, organizes prestigious conferences, and provides platforms for dialogue on emerging topics in behavioral science. The council currently supports a network of prestigious organizations around the world, including the Ethologische Gesellschaft (Germany), the International Society for Behavioral Ecology (ISBE), the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB, UK), the Animal Behavior Society (ABS, USA) and the Ethological Society of India. With its commitment to promote excellence, innovation, and interdisciplinary approaches, ICE is a cornerstone foundation in supporting our understanding of complexities of animal behavior, its ecological contexts, and its applications to conservation, welfare, and human-animal interactions.
